In 2013, I co-founded Docubox — Sub-Saharan Africa’s first independent documentary film fund — built by African filmmakers, for African filmmakers, at a moment when the continent barely had a documentary community to speak of. Over more than a decade, I grew it from a small grant-making platform into one of Africa’s most dynamic creative organisations: a movement that supported over 150 films, nurtured a new generation of storytellers, and helped turn Kenya into a globally recognised home for world-class documentary. Films supported through the fund premiered at Sundance, IDFA, and TIFF, with titles including Softie, The Letter — Kenya’s 2020 Oscar entry — and How to Build a Library. In December 2025, at the organisation’s strongest point in its history, I stepped down as Executive Director, passing the leadership to an exceptionally young, visionary team. It was the privilege of a lifetime.
